Glenview Community Church of Glenview, IL, an Open and Affirming church of the United Church of Christ, seeks a permanent, part-time Director of Adult Choirs. The music program is known for its high quality and enthusiastic involvement of its members. The Director of Adult Choirs reports to the Director of Music and collaborates closely with the music staff. 

Supervisor:  Senior Minister

Exempt:  Approximately 12-15 hours/week, 10 months per year

Qualifications
Academic training in music performance; minimum of Bachelor’s degree in music, preferably in choral conducting.
Experience as a church musician
      Demonstrated proficiency in conducting a variety of choral repertoire.
      Demonstrated proficiency in leading effective choral rehearsals.
      Ability to work effectively with instrumental ensembles.
      Experience as choral conductor, preferably in a church setting.
      Basic piano skills to play choral parts in rehearsal.
      Organizational and leadership skills
      Excellent relationship skills, especially in being able to work effectively
     with church staff, board members, and congregation.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the music staff to prepare the program of music for each scheduled worship service, including all Sundays, holidays, and other special services:
    • Assist in the selection of hymns and other congregational music in consultation with the Director of Music and ministers.
    • Collaborate with music staff to schedule choirs, soloists, and instrumentalists.
    • Communicate music planned well in advance of the service to the Director of Music.

Work with the music staff and the Music Board to develop plans which will promote the goals of music ministry.

Work with the music staff and the Music Board to prepare a budget for the music ministry providing funding for the needs of the adult choir(s)

  • Prepare the Chancel Choir to sing at one service each Sunday from the third Sunday in September through the first Sunday of June, and at two services on Rally Day, Easter and other Sundays designated in the music program calendar.
  • Prepare the Chancel Choir to sing at the following additional worship services:  Pageant, Christmas Eve, Good Friday, and occasionally Thanksgiving Eve.
  • Two to three times per choir season at services at which the Chancel Choir isn’t scheduled, prepare music for choral groups, inviting all interested parties to participate.
  • Lead rehearsals of the Chancel Choir once each week during the choir season.  Lead a warm-up rehearsal with the Chancel Choir before each service at which they sing.
  • Prepare the Chancel Choir to sing major works with guest instrumentalists on an occasional basis, usually twice a year.
  • Explore and execute plans to develop additional choral groups as interest, talent, and need evolve.  As groups develop collaborate with Senior Minister and Director of Music regarding directors and accompanists.
  • Select and purchase music for the Chancel Choir according to the goals of the congregation, the music program and provisions of the music budget.
  • Keep the church’s choral library organized and maintained.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Music and the Director of Children’s Choirs to make recommendations regarding budget needs for the music program.
  • Develop and implement a program for the recruitment, orientation and retention of volunteer choir members.
  • Support the Director of Music and Music Board in the development and implementation of the Concert Series.
  • Communicate regularly
    • With the ministers and music staff to plan worship services.
    • With the full staff of the church to develop and further the music ministry, and promote good communication.

With the Music Board to report on adult choir activities and coordinate planning, budgeting, and special projects.

With individual members of the music staff as needed.

With other boards, committees, staff members and individuals as needed.
